The questions help show the student's command of their own submission, not general subject knowledge. Questions are generated from the submission and pass automated quality gates, developed with Studiosity's Academic Standards team, for being answerable, unambiguous, and neither too easy nor too hard.
Students answer two main types of questions:
Open questions ask the student to explain, in their own words, something they stated, argued or suggested in their work. For example: "In your second paragraph, you cite Smith (2023). Briefly explain how this supports your conclusion."
Gap-fill questions, or 'cloze' questions show a sentence from the student's own submission with one word removed, and ask the student to fill it in.
How are the questions chosen?
Questions come one at a time. Each answer is read by the system, before the next question is chosen, and new questions are generated on every attempt. Before students see a question, automated quality checks confirm it can be answered, is clear and isn't ambiguous.
Do I need to write or mark the questions?
No. The questions are generated and assessed automatically. You can see each question and the student's answer when you review their submission.
Do spelling and grammar matter?
No. Answers are read for understanding, not spelling or grammar, so informal language and typos are fine.
