Educators: What stops a student from uploading AI-generated text as their writing sample?

Written by Sophia

There are several layers of protection:

  1. Clear rules at upload. The writing sample has to be the student's own earlier writing. It can't be AI-generated, it must be at least 500 words, and it shouldn't overlap with the work it will be compared against.

  2. Automatic checks at upload. These checks turn down writing samples that look AI-generated, too short or nearly the same as the assignment, and ask the student for a different one.

  3. The writing sample is only part of the evidence. Even if an AI-generated sample got through, Validate still checks the submission itself for patterns of human writing. The student also has to answer questions about their own submission. A writing sample that matches the submission can't make up for weak evidence on the other signals.

  4. You get to make the final call. You'll see the Authorship Continuity result alongside the other signals and the student's answers to the questions.
